At Bodywise we specialize in orthopedic and spine rehabilitation, and believe in a holistic approach that encompasses the evaluation and treatment of each joint in it’s relationship to the movement of the body as a whole. With this in mind, we approach the treatment of pain and dysfunction from three avenues; education, manual therapy, and motor-reprogramming.

  1. Education is the first step you will take on the road to healing. By gaining an understanding of your anatomy, “neutral alignment”, good posture, and proper bodymechanics, you develop the foundation on which to build healthy movement patterns.

  2. Manual Therapy is an essential part of the rehabilitation process. We incorporate techniques such as myofascial release, traction, deep tissue mobilization, joint mobilization, muscle energy, Kinesio-taping, and Graston. Our goal with these techniques is to decrease pain or swelling, and increase tissue mobility. This gives you the ability to achieve neutral joint mechanics as you move.

  3. Motor Reprogramming is an integral part of the rehabilitation process. In response to poor posture, trauma, overuse, or deconditioning, the body compensates by developing poor movement patterns. At Bodywise we use exercises that focus on strength, stability and flexibility to help you develop new and healthy movement patterns

The three keys to learning new movement patterns are repetition, variety, and visualization.

  1. Repetition. Only through a high number of repetitions does your body begin to re-learn its movement patterns. It is the key to moving from focused exercise to good habits.

  2. Variety: Based on your diagnosis, your therapist will choose several exercises with similar movement patterns which are done in a variety of positions. This will challenge your body to coordinate the movement using different muscles in each position. This increases your body’s ability to automatically use healthy movement patterns during functional activities.

  3. Visualization: Only perfect practice makes perfect. This is why monitoring exercise form with a mirror is important,  especially in the beginning stages. Often our perception of how we stand/move is not how it is in reality. Your therapist will help you to understand how to perform specific exercise patterns with perfect form. With practice you will develop a strong mind-body connection, and true awareness of how to hold and move your body.
